Hurricane Harvey has finally moved on from Texas, and floodwaters are receding across Houston. However, the challenges caused by this disaster are far from over. As water levels drop, the storm’s wreckage has become even more visible. Additionally, communities across southwestern Louisiana are now experiencing widespread flooding. More than 40 people have died, tens of thousands are in shelters and an estimated 80 percent of flooded homes may not be covered by insurance.
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is all too familiar with the needs of Texas due to our firsthand experience with Superstorm Sandy. We are actively working with the nationwide network of Feeding America food banks to lend our expertise, staff and supplies to support the recovery effort. We have already delivered water and other essentials and will send staff and more supplies, as per Feeding America’s requests.
Right now, the best way you can help is by donating to Texas. Monetary donations offer voluntary agencies and faith-based organizations flexibility to address urgent needs. With cash in hand, these organizations can obtain needed resources close to the disaster locations. This inflow of cash also pumps money back into the local economy and helps businesses recover faster.
