Corporate Partner Spotlight: Village Super Market Donates Much-Needed Fresh Milk to the FoodBank

Soon, New Jersey’s children will head back to school to learn, play, and prepare for bright futures. But for the nearly 270,000 NJ kids who are food insecure, basic staples of nutrition, like milk, may be missing from their diets. Milk is one of the most requested items by our neighbors in need, but it’s also one of the least donated.

Thankfully, we have partners like Village Super Markets to help us bridge this nutrition gap for children and families throughout the state. In June, they participated in the Great American Milk Drive for National Dairy Month, and thanks to their generous customers, raised more than 15,000 gallons of milk for the FoodBank. The first installments of more than 9,000 gallons for our Hillside warehouse and more than 6,000 gallons for our Southern Branch were delivered by Village volunteers in mid-August.

The fresh milk will be distributed to hungry families at farmers markets and community distributions.

“Without proper nutrition, kids can’t focus in school,” said Carlos Rodriguez, President & CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. “Contributions like these from forward-thinking corporate partners like Village Super Markets are an investment in the futures of hungry children, providing them with the nourishment that they need to lead healthy, active, and successful lives. Milk is a rare commodity for the FoodBank, so we’re grateful to have received it in such generous quantities.”

A family-owned company based in Springfield, NJ, Village Super Markets operates 29 ShopRites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland and supports the FoodBank year-round with food and fund donations, as well as volunteer visits.

“We’re so happy to be able to partner with the Community FoodBank of NJ throughout the year,” said Perry Blatt, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Village Super Market, Inc.  “Much like the FoodBank, Village Supermarket’s core purpose is to fight hunger in the communities we serve.  Whether we’re donating a $1 for every flu shot given, raising money for the Great American Milk Drive or Partners in Caring, proving Holiday Meal Bags, or volunteering with our associates, we know our efforts are going a long way for those that are facing hunger in New Jersey”

Village Super Markets is a member family of Wakefern Food Corp, which has been a major FoodBank partner since our incorporation in 1982. Wakefern is our largest food donor, with more than 4 million pounds of food given last year alone.

They are also a generous funder and a founding partner of Check-Out Hunger®, and they regularly volunteer in our warehouses.

Partners like Village Super Markets and Wakefern play a vital role in our mission to end hunger in New Jersey.
